It uses a special connector and has specific information on it that the Xbox checks when you turn it on.

You sure can! Theres a little cover on the top of the xbox (While it is in the upright position) that covers the hard drive bay. Just pop it off, and insert your new HDD :)

Yes, It has to be the Xbox hard drive though. Not a random one. They give you the option of a 25, 60, or 120 GB hard drive.
